Higher education abroad has been a dream for many Indian students. Countries like the UK and Canada have attracted thousands hoping for a brighter future. But it seems that the landscape has shifted dramatically.

Recently, an Indian woman living in London raised a red flag about pursuing education in the UK. Janhavi Jain, a marketing professional, used her platform on X to share some harsh realities. She highlighted that many of her batchmates struggled to find jobs post-study, leading her to caution others against making the investment.

“I have tons of people text me about coming to the UK for masters,” she stated. “I will tell you to not come. Ninety percent of my batch had to go back because there are no jobs. Unless you have money to throw, don’t consider it.”

The situation, according to Jain, wasn’t as dire in the past. She noted that 60-70 percent of international students typically found employment after graduation. Now, things appear different, with many students echoing her sentiment in the comments.

One commenter shared their experience after completing a postgraduate program, saying, “The only work I managed to get after completing my PG was door-to-door fundraising and dropping leaflets! I did it for over a year just to survive and returned after the visa expired.”

Another added that financial aid and scholarships could alleviate some of these challenges. They mentioned that a degree from the UK could be beneficial in India, especially if financial aid is available, as it makes costs more comparable to the outrageously high fees for MBA and Master’s programs in India.

The takeaway? While studying in the UK may have been a golden opportunity in the past, prospective students should tread carefully and consider their financial commitments before making a decision.
