In a significant move to inspire young minds, the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has revamped its Class 8 English textbook. The new book, titled ‘Poorvi’, is packed with stories of real-life Indian heroes, ranging from the first recipient of the Param Vir Chakra to the nation’s pioneering female particle physicist.
The inclusion of figures like Major Somnath Sharma, Verghese Kurien, and Bibha Chowdhuri adds depth and resonance to the educational material. Each story serves not just as a lesson but as an inspiration, igniting curiosity and respect for the contributions these individuals made to society.
This revised textbook aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) and the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCFSE) 2023. It comprises five thematic units filled with stories, poems, conversations, and descriptive pieces that aim to instill values such as courage, perseverance, and critical thinking in children.
Kirti Kapur, a distinguished professor of English, led the writing of this book. According to the introduction, it emphasizes essential themes including wisdom, values, and discovery while blending cross-cutting themes of inclusion, gender sensitivity, and Indian Knowledge Systems into every unit.
The first thematic unit, ‘Wit and Wisdom’, takes readers to the vibrant kingdom of Krishnadeva Raya. Here, students meet the legendary courtier Tenali Rama, known for his sharp wit and clever solutions. Through engaging storytelling, Kapur aims to teach students about the importance of intellect and humor.
Following this, the second unit showcases ‘Values and Dispositions’. Exciting chapters here introduce children to heroic tales, such as that of Major Somnath Sharma, whose valour in the Battle of Badgam underscores the values of duty and patriotism. Simultaneously, it features Verghese Kurien’s inspiring story, ‘I Too Had a Dream’, reinforcing the importance of community service and hard work.
The journey continues with the ‘Mystery and Magic’ unit, focusing on the wonders of creativity and nature through various narrative and poetic forms. Students will discover the beauty in intelligence and the magic that surrounds them, enriching their appreciation for the world.
The fourth unit, ‘Environment’, is equally as compelling, highlighting works by illustrious Indian authors like Ruskin Bond and Sarojini Naidu. As children read these poems, they will gain insights into the environment and the significance of nurturing it.
The final unit, ‘Science and Curiosity’, features Bibha Chowdhuri’s impactful journey as ‘The Beam of Light that Lit the Path for Women in Indian Science’. This unit aims to celebrate scientific advancements while encouraging discussions about contributions made by exemplary figures in the sciences.
The overarching goal of selecting these pieces is to resonate with the daily experiences of children. It aims to promote positive values such as resilience, empathy, and emotional intelligence. As students delve into these stories, they are encouraged to develop their worldviews deeply and positively.
Importantly, NCERT isn’t stopping at Class 8. The agency has been systematically rolling out new textbooks in accordance with NEP 2020 and NCFSE 2023 guidelines. Already, they have introduced new materials for Classes 1 and 2 in 2023, and plans are in place for new textbooks for other grades through 2024.
This transformation in the curriculum not only updates the educational content but also prioritizes the values and stories that shape a nation.
