Yoga Boosts Mental Health and Reduces Stress, Say Ministers

Yoga isn’t just about physical fitness. It plays a crucial role in mental well-being too. On the 11th International Yoga Day, Union Ministers highlighted how this ancient practice helps reduce stress and brings balance to life. The event, celebrated globally on June 21, was first proposed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2014 and quickly gained support from 177 nations through the United Nations.

Union Health Minister JP Nadda emphasized yoga’s mental health benefits in a social media post. He called it a practice that unites the mind, brain, and spirit, creating harmony within. “Yoga enables people to recognize their true selves,” he said. “It fosters positivity and helps us lead more successful lives.” His message urged everyone to embrace yoga as a daily habit for holistic wellness.

The Ministry of Ayush also underscored yoga’s growing global appeal. In a world grappling with stress and imbalance, yoga has emerged as a solution. “India’s yoga is a ray of hope,” the ministry stated. Anupriya Patel, Union Minister of State for Health, echoed this sentiment, calling yoga a gift of Indian culture that guides the world toward healthier living. She encouraged people to adopt yoga as part of a positive, active lifestyle.

Scientific research supports these claims. Studies from AIIMS, New Delhi, show yoga’s effectiveness in treating cardiac and neurological disorders. It also plays a significant role in women’s health and mental well-being. Union Minister Pralhad Joshi added that daily yoga can lead to good health, prosperity, and societal peace.

Prime Minister Modi, leading celebrations in Vishakhapatnam, highlighted yoga’s role in promoting global peace. At a time of widespread conflict, he said, yoga offers a path to stability. To mark the occasion, a special postage stamp was released, symbolizing India’s yoga heritage and its worldwide acceptance. The stamp serves as a reminder of yoga’s role in fostering health and harmony.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, participating in Faridabad, emphasized this year’s theme: “Yoga for One Earth, One Health.” The theme reflects the connection between human and planetary wellness, rooted in the Indian philosophy of universal well-being. Yoga continues to be a beacon of hope, bridging physical health and mental peace for millions worldwide.
