In a heartbreaking incident that has shaken the nation, Air India flight AI171 crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad on Thursday afternoon. This tragedy marks one of the worst aircraft disasters in India’s aviation history.
Actor Vikrant Massey took to Instagram to share the news, revealing that his uncle, Clifford Kunder, lost his son, Clive Kunder, who was the flight’s co-pilot. Massey expressed his sorrow, saying, “My heart breaks for the families and loved ones of the ones who lost their lives in the unimaginably tragic air crash in Ahmedabad today.”
The flight, which was bound for London Gatwick, had 242 people on board, including 230 passengers and 12 crew members. Tragically, Air India confirmed that 241 passengers lost their lives, with only one survivor currently receiving treatment in the hospital. Clive Kunder was noted as the first officer operating the fateful flight.
In a subsequent post, Massey clarified that Clive was not his cousin, but rather a family friend. The emotional weight of this incident is immense, resonating deeply with all those affected.
In response to the tragedy, the Tata Group pledged an ex gratia payment of ₹1 crore to the families of each victim and will also cover medical expenses for the injured. They stated, “We will ensure that families receive all necessary care and support.”
In a further note of sorrow, President Draupadi Murmu expressed condolences over the loss of former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, who was also aboard the ill-fated flight.
