Thousands of bike taxi riders across Karnataka rallied at Vidhana Soudha on Saturday, pressing the state government to lift the ban and introduce a clear regulatory framework. More than 5,000 riders from Mysuru, Mandya, Hassan, and other districts joined the protest, highlighting the dire financial strain the ban has caused.

Before the ban, bike taxis were a lifeline for many families, offering affordable transport for commuters and steady income for riders. Now, over six lakh bike taxi riders face unemployment, with no alternatives in sight. A distressing press release from the riders reads, “Families that once depended on daily rides for income are now struggling to put food on the table or pay school fees.”

Ramesh, a rider from Tumakuru, shared his desperation. “Before the ban, I could manage. Now, we skip meals just to survive. There’s no money for my child’s school fees. How is this fair?”

Priya, a rider from Mandya, echoed his sentiments. “This goes beyond earnings. It’s about survival. The government must act before it’s too late.”

The riders also drew attention to the fact that 19 other states have bike taxi policies in place. Karnataka’s delay, they argue, is costing livelihoods. Meanwhile, commuters who relied on these services for quick, budget-friendly travel are also feeling the brunt of the ban.

As tensions escalated, police detained several protesters for violating protest guidelines. Authorities confirmed that the demonstration outside Vidhana Soudha lacked prior permission, prompting swift action.

The unrest reflects a deepening crisis. With no resolution in sight, bike taxi riders remain in limbo. Their plea is simple: lift the ban, regulate the sector, and let them work.
