India’s newly appointed captain Shubman Gill delivered a masterclass on the opening day of the second Test against England at Edgbaston. His unbeaten 114 ensured India finished the day strongly at 310-5, despite England’s persistent attack. The pressure was immense on Gill, especially after tea when two quick wickets threatened to expose India’s lower order. But the young skipper stood firm, battling leg cramps and showcasing his class with a patient yet decisive knock.

Gill’s partnership with Ravindra Jadeja (41 not out) was crucial. The duo added 99 runs, frustrating England’s bowlers with sharp running and calculated aggression. Gill’s century came in dramatic fashion—back-to-back boundaries just before the new ball was taken, off his 199th delivery. The celebration that followed was a mix of relief and pride, marking his seventh Test hundred. His form has been exceptional, coming hot on the heels of his 147 in the Leeds Test.

Opener Yashasvi Jaiswal also played a significant role, scoring a fluent 87 before an uncharacteristic dismissal halted his progress. His partnership with Karun Nair (31) added 80 quick runs, helping India recover from an early wobble. However, Nair’s dismissal just before lunch prevented India from dominating the morning session completely.

England, led by Ben Stokes, stuck to their aggressive mindset by bowling first—a decision Stokes has made 10 out of 11 times at home. Chris Woakes was their standout bowler, finishing with 2-59 and causing problems early on. His early dismissals and near-misses with LBW appeals kept India cautious, though he rued the umpire’s calls that didn’t go his way.

The match hangs in a delicate balance. India will want Gill and Jadeja to push the score beyond 400, while England will aim to strike early with the new ball. One thing is certain—Shubman Gill’s brilliance has set the stage for an enthralling contest.
