Oslo, Norway: The Norwegian Nobel Committee has awarded the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize to Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado for her tireless efforts in promoting democratic rights and political freedom in Venezuela.
The prestigious honor includes a cash award of 11 million Swedish kronor (approximately USD 1.17 million), along with a gold medal and official diploma presented in Oslo later this year.
Committee Chair Jørgen Watne Frydnes praised Machado’s courage and dedication, stating that the decision was based solely on “the spirit and principles envisioned by Alfred Nobel.” He noted that the committee remains independent of external influence despite global attention and numerous lobbying efforts.
The Nobel Peace Prize is one of six Nobel awards established by Alfred Nobel and is often the most closely followed worldwide.
This year’s announcement drew additional public interest, as former U.S. President Donald Trump was among the high-profile figures nominated. Trump, who has long expressed that he deserves the prize, reiterated during his address at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in September that he “ended seven wars,” claiming no other leader had achieved anything comparable.
Machado’s recognition marks a significant moment for Venezuela’s pro-democracy movement, highlighting global support for peaceful political reform and human rights in the South American nation.
