The Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT), a key ally of the BJP in Tripura, has raised a significant demand for a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in the state. This move comes shortly after another BJP ally, the Tipra Motha Party (TMP), made a similar appeal to the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC).
A four-member delegation from IPFT, led by party president Prem Kumar Reang, met CEC Gyanesh Kumar in New Delhi on August 1 and submitted a formal memorandum backing the demand. The party’s general secretary, Swapan Debbarma, emphasized that the Election Commission must ensure no genuine citizen is excluded from the electoral rolls.
Debbarma also announced a major rally scheduled for August 23 at Swami Vivekananda Ground in Agartala to observe ‘Sixth Schedule Day.’ Unlike previous years, where the event was held at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar, the location has shifted to Tripura due to the upcoming crucial elections for the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC).
The IPFT remains vocal about its long-standing demand for a separate state of Tipraland, encompassing TTAADC areas. The party had secured 14 ST-reserved seats in the 2018 assembly elections, playing a decisive role in the BJP-led coalition ousting the Left Front from power.
Ahead of the rally, the IPFT plans to submit a memorandum to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, routed through Governor N Indrasena Reddy, reiterating their call for Tipraland. The political landscape in Tripura remains dynamic as alliances and demands take center stage ahead of critical elections.
