The Election Commission is set to announce the Bihar Assembly poll schedule next week. This has prompted the Congress party to begin internal discussions on finalizing its candidate list. Sources indicate the party will likely field most of its sitting MLAs to maintain stability.

Seat-sharing talks among INDIA bloc partners are expected to conclude by early October. The Congress party is preparing to contest fewer seats compared to the 2020 elections. This strategic reduction aims to better accommodate alliance partners and streamline efforts.

In the previous assembly elections, the Congress contested 70 seats but secured only 19. This performance drew criticism from within the party, highlighting the need for a revised approach. Leaders are now focused on optimizing their strategy for the upcoming polls.

A party leader noted that this time, the Congress plans to contest 60-65 seats. This adjustment allows for greater collaboration with alliance partners. It reflects a more calculated approach to the electoral battle in Bihar.

Retaining sitting MLAs for the 19 seats won previously is a key part of the plan. Dropping incumbents could trigger internal rebellion and lead to rebel candidates. Such scenarios would negatively impact the party’s prospects in the election.

A senior leader emphasized the importance of avoiding a repeat of past mistakes. In Haryana, denied tickets resulted in independents contesting against the party. The Congress is keen to prevent similar disruptions in Bihar.

Candidate selection meetings are actively ongoing in Delhi and Bihar. Input is being gathered from local leaders, block committees, and district units. This collaborative effort ensures that decisions are well-informed and representative.

Some Congress leaders advocate for dropping poorly performing sitting MLAs. Internal surveys suggest that fresh faces could improve chances in key seats. However, the leadership remains cautious about the risks involved.

The potential for revolt and rebel candidates is a significant concern. The party aims to leverage Rahul Gandhi’s campaign against vote theft. Any internal discord could undermine this national narrative and harm electoral gains.

A senior party leader highlighted the timing of these decisions. The Congress does not want setbacks from rebels during this critical period. Ensuring unity is paramount as the election approaches.

In the 2020 assembly elections, the RJD contested 144 seats and won 75. The CPI(ML) contested 19 seats and secured 12 victories. The CPI won 2 of 6 seats, and the CPI(M) won 2 of 4.

These results underscore the competitive landscape in Bihar. The Congress must navigate alliances and internal dynamics carefully. Every decision could influence the final outcome.

The focus remains on finalizing a candidate list that balances experience and renewal. With the poll schedule imminent, the party is working diligently to present a strong front. Voters and allies alike are watching these developments closely.

As discussions continue, the Congress aims to solidify its strategy for Bihar. The goal is to maximize gains while minimizing internal friction. The coming weeks will be crucial for the party’s electoral fortunes.
