Adani Power has just secured a massive 1,600 MW ultra-supercritical thermal power project from MP Power Management Company. The company will invest Rs 21,000 crore to set up the plant and related infrastructure. This marks a significant step in India’s energy sector.
A letter of award was received on Thursday from MPPMCL. It awarded an additional 800 MW capacity under the Greenshoe Option. This innovative mechanism is a first for thermal power tenders in India.
Adani Power is India’s largest private sector thermal power generator. The total awarded capacity now stands at 1,600 MW from this tendering process. This comes after an initial success in winning 800 MW earlier.
The company has been on a winning streak. This is the fifth major power supply order received in the last 12 months. The total awarded capacity has now reached an impressive 7,200 MW.
The additional 800 MW is awarded at the same tariff. It is set at Rs 5.838 per kWh, matching the earlier awarded capacity. This ensures consistency and fairness in pricing.
Power will be supplied from a new 1,600 MW ultra-supercritical thermal power unit. It will be set up under the design, build, finance, own, and operate model. The location is in Anuppur district of Madhya Pradesh.
Both units are scheduled for commissioning within 60 months of the appointed date. The investment of Rs 21,000 crore highlights the project’s scale. It underscores Adani Power’s commitment to expanding its footprint.
The greenshoe option adoption is a landmark moment. It will help Madhya Pradesh meet its growing electricity demand. Increased industrialisation and urbanisation are driving this need.
Adani Power CEO S B Khyalia expressed delight over the achievement. Securing both the initial and additional capacity is a major win. It reinforces the company’s leadership in the sector.
Coal linkage for the power plant has been allocated under the SHAKTI Policy. This government initiative supports fuel security for power projects. It ensures smooth operations and timely execution.
The project is a boon for employment. It will generate 9,000 to 10,000 direct and indirect jobs during construction. Once operational, it will provide employment for about 2,000 people.
A power supply agreement is expected to be executed with the state discom in due course. This will formalize the arrangements and kickstart implementation. It is a critical next step for the project.
Adani Power currently has an operating capacity of 18.15 GW from 12 thermal power plants. The company aims to achieve an overall generation capacity of 41.87 GW by 2031-32. This project is a key part of that growth strategy.
The company’s installed thermal power capacity spans multiple states. It includes plants in Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka, and others. There is also a 40 MW solar power plant in Gujarat.
This development enhances energy security for Madhya Pradesh. It supports regional development and economic growth. Adani Power continues to play a pivotal role in India’s power landscape.
