Former Indian cricketing legend Syed Kirmani made it clear where his heart lies. At the launch of his book *Stumped* in Hyderabad, he proudly declared his deep connection to the city. “I am proud to be Hyderabadi. My roots are there in Hyderabad. I studied at All Saints’ School in the city. VVS Laxman also studied in the same school,” he shared. The event, graced by Labour Minister G Vivek Venkatswamy, turned into a nostalgic celebration of Kirmani’s journey both on and off the field.

Kirmani, known for his sharp wicketkeeping and unshakable presence in the 1983 World Cup-winning squad, took the audience down memory lane with an amusing anecdote from the historic final. “Balwinder Singh joined me in the last-wicket partnership,” he recalled. “In those days, there were no proper helmets. A bouncer hit him on the helmet. He moved away from the stumps, rubbing his helmet. I asked why. He paused, said, ‘Ah! Am I rubbing my helmet?’ and took it off.” The light-hearted moment offered a glimpse into the camaraderie and challenges of cricket in that era.

Labour Minister G Vivek Venkatswamy praised Kirmani for his contributions to Indian cricket, emphasizing how the former player brought respect to the national team globally. He also highlighted the Telangana government’s efforts to support athletes, mentioning initiatives like cash rewards and housing sites for sportspersons.

The book launch wasn’t just about cricket but also about identity and legacy. Kirmani’s heartfelt acknowledgment of Hyderabad as his hometown resonated with many in attendance. His connection to the city, shared with fellow cricketer VVS Laxman through their alma mater, added a personal touch to the event.

Kirmani’s storytelling, blending humor and nostalgia, kept the audience engaged. From recalling tense moments in World Cup matches to celebrating his Hyderabadi heritage, the evening was a fitting tribute to a man who left an indelible mark on Indian cricket. His pride in his roots and his sport shone through every anecdote and every word of appreciation from the dignitaries present.
