A woman from Andheri West, Mumbai, fell victim to a cyber fraud scheme after downloading a fake cleaning service app called ‘Urban Club.’ Posing as a legitimate service provider, scammers tricked her into making a small UPI payment of ₹9, which granted them remote access to her device. Before she knew it, ₹99,000 had vanished from her bank account.
The scammers initially posed as representatives of ‘Urban Club,’ a likely imitation of the well-known Urban Company (formerly UrbanClap). After convincing her to download the app, they siphoned her funds by exploiting remote access tools—raising concerns about the rise in such digital frauds.
Police have filed a case under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and IT Act while investigating the incident. Authorities suspect the app contained malware designed to steal sensitive banking details, urging users to stay vigilant when downloading apps or sharing payment information online.
